Games

General

  • What games do you offer?

All of the games we offer are listed on the Games Overview page.

  • How do I start playing?

It's easy to start playing! Simply start making picks for your favorite sports from your profile page. Once you've made some picks, either Challenge a Friend heads up, or Create a Group and compete against a bunch of your friends at once.

  • How do I play? What are the rules?

Check out our How to Play tutorial.

Picking Matchups & Gaining Points

  • How do I gain points?

You gain points by correctly picking the winner of matchups in your favorite sports. For team-based games, this means correctly predicting which team will beat the other in their real-world game. For player-based games, this means correctly choosing which player will score more Fantasy Points (see What are Fantasy Points) according to the Scoring Rules for that Kontend Game.

How many points you gain for making the correct selection, depends on the relative frequency with which other users made that pick. The more users who picked against you (i.e. the bigger the upset you predict), the more points you get. The exact number of points corresponds to the percentage of users who made the opposite pick.

For example, if there is Monday matchup between Lebron James and Allen Iverson, and 75% of users pick Lebron and 25% of users choose Iverson, then:

    • If Lebron James scores more Fantasy Points, then users who chose Lebron gain 25 points.
    • If Allen Iverson scores more Fantasy Points, the users who chose Iverson gain 75 points.
  • How do you determine the matchups?

For team games, matchups correspond to real-world games being played that day or that week, with the number of matchups varying by Game (see the rules for your specific Kontend Game for details). For player games, we provide 8 matchups per day for daily games, and 10 per week for weekly games, based on our super secret algorithm. We do our best, through this algorithm to provide a mixture of matchups - some evenly balanced, some a little more lop-sided - in order to provide varied and interesting game play. We also do our best to avoid using injured or otherwise inactive players in matchups - however, there are times where, because of the timing of information available to us versus the timing to generate matchups, when injured or inactive players may be included. In those cases it is up to the user to stay on top of the news and information which affects his matchups and adjust his choices accordingly.

  • How many picks do I need to make each day?

You can make as many or as few picks as you want on a given day. However, your chances of gaining points, and therefore winning challenges or doing well in your group, increase if you make all the picks on a given day for the sports in which you are competing.

    • For team-based games, the number of matchups offered for that day or that week varies by Game - see the rules for your specific Kontend Game for details.
    • For player-based games, we usually offer 8 matchups per day or per week (depending on sport). However, for certain games that number may vary. See the rules for your specific game for details.
  • What's the deadline for making picks?

The deadline for making picks is the start time for the earliest real-world game for that day in the appropriate sport. For example, if the earliest NBA start time this Monday was the 5:30 game between the New York Knicks and the Orlando Magic, you would have to have your picks for Monday submitted before 5:30 for them to count.

  • Can I change my picks?

Yes, you can change your picks up until the deadline for that day (or week) for that game. To change your picks, select the game you want from the Games dropdown menu. On the Game page, find the pick you'd like to change and click on the "switch" icon (two arrows) for that matchup.

  • Can I make picks for future days?

For daily games, picks are available up to three days. For users without an active or pending challenge, picks will be presented in time order from the current day through three days out. For users involved in a challenge (active or sent/pending), picks for the challenge day will be presented first, followed by other available picks up to three days out.

For weekly games, picks are only available for the current week.

  • You included an injured player in a matchup - what gives?

We do our best to avoid using injured or otherwise inactive players in matchups - however, there are times where, because of the timing of information available to us versus the timing to generate matchups, when injured or inactive players may be included. In those cases it is up to the user to stay on top of the news and information which affects his matchups and adjust his choices accordingly.

  • Why aren't there any matchups today for the game I'm playing?

Matchups available depend in some cases on the number of real-world games being played that day.

    • For team-based games, we always offer matchups up to the maximum allowed for that Game (see the rules for your specific Kontend Game), as long as real-world games are being played.
    • For player-based games, we only offer matchups if three or more real-world games are taking place that day, in order to maintain the quality and variety of matchups available. With less than three games, we feel the player pool is insufficient to create the necessary number of quality matchups.
  • How many points do I get for picking a matchup correctly?

How many points you gain for making the correct selection, depends on the relative frequency with which other users made that pick. The more users who picked against you (i.e. the bigger the upset you predict), the more points you get. The exact number of points corresponds to the percentage of users who made the opposite pick.

For example, if there is Monday matchup between Lebron Jame and Allen Iverson, and 75% of users pick Lebron and 25% of users choose Iverson, then:

    • If Lebron James scores more Fantasy Points, then users who chose Lebron gain 25 points.
    • If Allen Iverson scores more Fantasy Points, the users who chose Iverson gain 75 points.

Scoring Matchups

  • How do you determine the winner of a matchup?

    • For team-based games, the winner of the matchup is the team who won the real-world game.
    • For player-based games, the winner of the matchup is the player who scored the most Fantasy Points according to the Scoring Rules for that Kontend Game.
  • What are Fantasy Points?

Fantasy Points are a way of calculating how well players perform in real-world games for the purposes of determing a matchup winner. Players score Fantasy Points based on their statistical performance in real-world games. For example, an NFL running back gets six fantasy points for every touchdown, gets 1 for every 20 yards rushed, and loses 2 for every fumble. We calculate a player's Fantasy Point total based on their entire statistical performance in a real-world game using the Scoring Rules for that particular Kontend Game.

  • How do you calculate Fantasy Points for a given game?

Players score Fantasy Points based on their statistical performance in real-world games. For example, an NFL running back gets six fantasy points for every touchdown, gets 1 for every 20 yards rushed, and loses 2 for every fumble. We calculate a player's Fantasy Point total based on their entire statistical performance in a real-world game using the Scoring Rules for that particular Kontend Game.

Challenges

  • What are Challenges?

Challenges are a great way to compete head-to-head with your friends for bragging rights. In a Challenge, you and your friend agree upon a Game and time for the Challenge, then submit your matchup selections for that Game. Whoever scores the most points wins the challenge!

    • To challenge a friend, go to the Challenge Friend page and pick the Game and the time you'd like to set for the challenge.
    • To accept a Challenge, go to the Pending Challenges page and click Accept Challenge.
    • A Challenge must be accepted for it to count.
    • After sending or accepting a Challenge, make sure to make all your matchup selections for that Game and time.
    • For daily games, Challenges last one day. For weekly games, Challenges last a week.
    • Have fun! Your Challenge record will be tracked and displayed on your profile and your Challenge page.
  • How do I challenge a Friend?

To challenge a friend, go to the Challenge Friend page and pick the Game and the time you'd like to set for the challenge. Once you've sent a challenge, your friend must accept it for the Challenge to count.

  • After I challenge someone what do I do?

Once you've challenged someone, make all your matchup selections for that Game from either your profile or Game page. Matchups for that Challenge will be marked as "Challenge Picks" and will be presented to you before any other picks for that Game.

  • How many people can I challenge?

You can play up to five Challenges per game per day or week (depending on the timeframe of the game).

  • How long do Challenges last?

For daily games, Challenges last one day. For weekly games, they last one week.

  • How many days in advance can I challenge someone?

For daily games, you can challenge someone for today or up to two days after. For weekly games, you can only challenge someone for the current week.

  • I can't challenge my friend in the sport I want today - what gives?

Sometimes if there aren't a sufficient number of real-world games being played that day, we do not offer Challenges for that Game. We do this to make sure that there are sufficient number of matchups to make the Challenge interesting and statistically significant. For team-based Games, there must be at least five real-world games for Challenges to be offered. For player-based Games, there must be at least three real-world games for Challenges to be offered.

  • How do you determine who wins a Challenge?

The winner of a Challenge is the user who scored the most points for the Game for that day (or week). To see how you won or lost a Challenge, go to your Challenge Results and click on the "+" to show the expanded results for that Challenge.

  • Do you keep track of the challenges I win?

We sure do. Challenges won are shown on your profile page and in the mini-profile displayed in search results. You can also see more stats on challenges - such as won, lost, sent accepted - by going to My Challenges

Kontender Leaderboards

  • What are Kontenders?

Kontenders are generally what we call the users of our site, and more specifically how we refer to those users who make it up on our leaderboards. We see our site as one big competition, and if you check out the Kontenders area, you will be able to see how you stack up.

  • Is there anywhere to see how well I'm going compared to other users?

If you want to see how you are doing against your friends, check out the standings on the Group Profile page for any group you belong to. If you aren't in a group, create one and invite your friends. If you want to see how you're doing against the rest of the world, however, visit the Kontenders area of the site. There you will able to see where you rank amongst all our users, and see what it takes to get to the top of the crowd.

  • How do you rank people on your site?

We rank our Kontenders a bunch different ways. We have standings for every game we offer, and we have the prestigious Overall Standings.

For our overall leaderboard, there are two metrics we use to measure greatness. One is Total Points - this ranks our users by how many points they've accumulated playing Games at Kontend over their lifetime on the site. The other is Challenges Won - which ranks users by exactly that, the number of times they've beat another user head-to-head in one of our Challenges.

For the specialists out there, who are more interested in their prowess in a specific sport or Game, check out the leaderboards for the Games you care most about.
